The Italian family therapist and child psychiatrist Maurizio Andolfi (1942) is known worldwide for his inspirational and creative way of working with families. He developed his own method of multi- generational family-psychotherapy. Andolfi states that family therapy is the best individual therapy. According to Andolfi severe children’s problems are always problems of the family as a whole. He then invites the problem child to be his co-therapist and to be a guide on the route to recovery and to help solve problems in the family. Instead of staying the expert by himself or letting the hospital or other therapists be the expert, a crucial goal in Andolfi’s therapy is to give patient and family members back their competence to regain control over their own lives. Andolfi also finds it important that therapists themselves learn to use their own life/family experiences in therapy. In this documentary Andolfi tells the story of his own life and work, and we see him working with families.
